On Thursday, we went back to Isom's Orchard, where we visited on our anniversary. It's nice to visit places that bring back good memories. The air was crisp, the trees were beautiful with hues of late fall, and the breeze smelled like apples.
I sipped hot apple cider, and Mack had an apple cider slushy. Before heading home, we decided to relax on one of the orchard benches for a while. While we sat there, surrounded by rows of apple trees with families enjoying fun in the afternoon, we talked about that old saying "An apple a day helps keeps the doctor away."
We joked over how many times we heard it as kids and tried to remember where it came from. We did a little google research and found that it goes all the way back to 1866 in Wales, where the original saying was, "Eat an apple before bed, and the doctor won't make any money." That old saying is still very true today.
Finding a lot in the small things
Last week we shared with our Thrive Crew that "Abundance" is our word for November. This trip to the orchard helped us further explore what that means. A lot of something doesn't always mean you have too much or more than you need. Sometimes, it's about finding the beauty in what's already there.
The cider, the laughs we shared, and the calm of being together in nature are all evidence of having a lot.
Why Apples Are Still Important, Even After 50
As we get older, the things we eat become even more vital. People often think of apples as a simple snack. We eat apples almost every day for these reasons:
Soluble fiber in apples helps decrease cholesterol and maintains your heart and gut healthy.
Natural antioxidants: Quercetin and vitamin C are both good for the skin since they lessen inflammation and improve the immune system.
Steady energy: The natural sugars take a long time to break down, so you get energy that lasts without the crash.
A medium apple has less than 100 calories, adding to the reasons of it being a really good snack.
Grateful for the good things around us
As we sat at Isom's and watched people come and go, we were grateful. Not just for the fresh apples, but also for this period in our lives when we can take a break and enjoy times like these. Having such a great spot to go to in Huntsville makes us feel like we have enough.
So let's raise a glass to apples, good health, and all the beautiful things that happen to us, even the small, sweet ones. 🍎
What does "abundance" mean to you this month? It could be spending time with family and friends, laughing around the table, or getting a basket of delicious apples from your favorite orchard.
In the comments below, please tell us what abundance means to you. We want to hear from you! For real for real, share with us.
