Making Every Day Count After 50

We used to believe that the most memorable parts of life would always be the big ones.

The vacation of our dreams.

The birthday milestone.

Retiring.

The family reunion.

The bucket list adventures.

These times are great and we appreciate all of them.

But somewhere along the way we've discovered something unexpected.

The life we are most thankful for is not made up of days we mark on the calendar.

It’s made of common Tuesday afternoons.

The morning stroll before the neighborhood is awake.

The coffee discussions.

Trying a new place to eat instead of going back to the old one.

Heading home the long way, just because we have the time.

Those little moments quietly became some of our favorites.

This summer has reminded us of that more than ever!

We’ve stayed in great hotels, seen new cities, dined on rooftops to watch sunsets, and wandered places we’ve never seen before. Those encounters have been amazing yet when we look back, it is not necessarily what we remember first.

Sometimes it's the conversation we had while walking to dinner.

The local coffee shop with the delicious iced Americano that we stumbled across by accident.

The quiet view from a hotel balcony before the city came alive.

The laughter that happened because something didn't quite go according to our plans.

Those are the moments that stay with us.

Getting older has changed the way we look at time. Not because we feel like we're running out of it.

Because we've finally...Read More

Did Spending a Month Talking About Purpose Help Us Discover Our Own?

We chose a single word to lead our talks with our community at the beginning of this month.

Purpose.

We wrote about it, talked about it, and encouraged others to think about what gives their lives meaning after 50.

What we didn’t expect was how much those conversations would change us.

As we share stories, think about our own experiences, and read your comments we recognized something. Sometimes purpose is not something you need to go looking for. Sometimes it gets clearer only because we slow down long enough to listen.

That has certainly been the case for us.

Purpose Was There All Along

We used to assume purpose was something big, as many people do.

A new career.

A big accomplishment.

A one in a life time opportunity.

But in recent weeks, we’ve been reminded that purpose often shows up in much more quiet ways.

It is found in giving hope to a person who needs hope.

It is found in choosing motion, because we want more life, not just more years.

There’s something about discovering new locations together and sharing those experiences with those who may have believed their adventurous days were behind them.

It is found in every conversation that reminds someone they are not too old to dream, travel, grow, or begin again.

The more we talked about purpose, the more we recognized that this has been our purpose all along.

You Helped Us See It

Perspective is one of the best gifts that our <a...Read More

Is It Ever Too Late to Discover Your Purpose After 50?

Have you ever looked back on your life and felt your greatest significance was in the past?

It’s a silent question that many people hold but few ever speak aloud.

At some point we start to think that purpose is for the young. That the greatest dreams, the biggest adventures, and the most important contributions come earlier in life.

We don't buy that for a second.

We believe that purpose never expires. It just grows and changes along with us.

Purpose is not something we find once and hence it’s never too late to find your purpose. It's something we're still growing into.

Purpose Expands With Us

Purpose has never been the same throughout our life.

There have been times when we have been busy growing our jobs, taking care of our families, dealing with adversity or just trying to get through bad days.

Each season shaped who we are today.

The experiences that made us laugh, the times that challenged us, the lessons we learned all added to our story.

So this season has something to teach us, too.

Purpose should not remain still as we grow older. It is becoming part of us.

This Season Is Calling Us To Live Differently

One of the best things about this season of life is we start to measure achievement differently.

We’re less concerned with proving ourselves and more concerned with living with intention.

We’d rather have meaningful talks than busy schedules.

More focused in creating enduring memories,...Read More

Could the Best Parts of Life After 50 Be the Ones We Never Planned?

If there’s one thing this season of life has taught us, it’s that the best chapters rarely begin the way we expect them to.

Like most people, we thought we knew what life after 50 would be like. We made plans, we dreamed, and we imagined what the years ahead would bring.

Some of those plans happened.

Many didn't.

Looking back, we're thankful they didn't.

A lot of the things that have given us the most joy were never on our radar. They arrived because we stayed open to a different path than the one we had mapped out.

Sometimes the Detour Becomes the Destination

When we left full time RV living and opted to make Huntsville our home, it was such a huge transition.

We knew we had made the right decision but we had no idea what was going to happen next.

We certainly never imagined we would be sharing more of our travel stories online to thousands of people, experiencing new places as content creators, or inspiring others over 50 to keep saying yes to new adventures.

Life has a funny way of bringing opportunities we never knew we were looking for.

That doesn’t only happen with travel.

It does happen in relationships.

In Career.

In pastimes.

And in the friendships we build along the way.

Sometimes a single unexpected decision silently impacts all that follows.

The Plans May Change, but the Purpose Doesn't

We've come to believe that purpose isn't found in one place, one career, or one season of life.

Our purpose expands with us.

It appears in varied ways as our lives change:

<li...Read More

Can Traveling With Purpose After 50 Change More Than Your Destination?

For a long time we thought travel was about seeing as many places as possible.

The more states we visited, the more national parks we explored, the more miles we logged, the more we felt we were winning at travel.

Then something happened.

At some point, especially after we both were beyond the age of 50, we realized that the trips we remember best are not the ones where we crammed the schedule full. They’re the ones we laughed until our sides hurt, watched the sun come up with a cup of coffee, held the hands of our grandchildren, or just sat quietly by the water with nowhere to be.

We’ve come to believe that travel after 50 is not about going farther. It's about coming home feeling more alive.

The Question Isn't "Where Should We Go?" It's "Why Are We Going?"

One question changes everything. Sometimes the answer is to reconnect with one another.

Sometimes to celebrate a milestone, sometimes it's to rest after a busy month and sometimes it is a reminder to ourselves that there is so much life left to be lived.

When we know our purpose before we leave home, every part of the journey feels more meaningful.

Purpose is different for everyone.

Our favorite part of this season of life is that we finally have permission to travel differently. We don’t have to be someone else’s bucket list.

Purpose has shown up in so many ways for us.

It has been on the road to spend precious time with our grand children. We know how fast they are growing.

We have been taking road trips that we can enjoy, instead of rushing through airports.

We’ve been choosing places where we can walk, explore and keep moving, because when we’re active, we feel our best.
<p class="...Read More

Could One Simple Card Help Someone Feel More Connected After 50?

As we near the end of June we have been reflecting on what the theme of connection has meant to us this month. We didn't just write about it. That was our life.

The last few weeks have found us traveling through Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania. We also took time to catch up with friends and family we hadn’t seen in a while along the way.

Some visits took a couple of hours. Others were merely a meal, or a cup of coffee. None of them had to be complicated. All that mattered was being together.

After every visit something interesting happened. Almost always one of us would say as we drove away, "I'm so glad we did that."

We were left with a feeling long after the conversation ended. We laughed. We exchanged memories. We caught up on our lives. For a moment the miles and the months between us disappeared.

A reminder that connection does not always have to be for a special occasion. Sometimes it's simply a matter of trying.

As we’ve gotten older we’ve discovered that time feels different. We don’t know how many times we will get to sit around a kitchen table, to hug someone goodbye, to hear one more story that we have never heard before.

That realization has led us to reintroduce something we used to do years ago.

We are going to start sending greeting cards again.

Not because it’s someone’s birthday or a holiday is coming. Why not?

A simple card in the mailbox saying, ‘we were thinking of you,’ or ‘we love you,’ can change the whole day for someone. It's amazing how personal a handwritten note in the mailbox feels in the world of text messages and social media notifications.

It’s a small thing but it’s often the small things that people remember the most.

Connection doesn’t always come through grand gestures. It's created by repeatedly being reminded that you matter.

As this month comes to an end, we hope you’ll...Read More

What Helps Us Feel Connected After 50

There are times after 50 when life appears radically different than we thought.

Children grow up and make their own life. Retirement alters our routines. Friends go away. Health problems may come out of nowhere. Sometimes we migrate. We lose individuals we love sometimes.

Life can be rich, and yet there are times we feel disconnected.

Not necessarily separated from the world, but disconnected from the things that make us feel anchored, supported, and like ourselves

The truth is that connection after 50 is not usually built through grand gestures.

Why connection is more important than we think

When people think about wellbeing, they think about movement, nutrition, or sleep.

Those things matter.

But connection matters too

The simple feeling of being cared for. Chattering away about other things than the weather, having dinner with friends. laughing at an inside joke or quietly sitting with someone who knows your story.

These moments may seem ordinary, but they have a way of helping us feel steady when life feels uncertain.

The Small Moments We Often Overlook

Recently, we've been spending a lot of time on the road.

There have been visits with family, conversations with old friends, and unexpected moments that reminded us how important connection really is.

What stood out wasn't anything extravagant.

It was the simple things.

A conversation that lasted longer than planned.

A text message checking in.

A shared meal around a table.

A familiar face after months apart.

<p...Read More

Are You Letting People Know the Real You After 50?

Connection is about more than being around people.

This month we have been exploring different aspects of connection. First we looked at the importance of connection to marriages and long term relationships. Then we discussed the importance of not becoming isolated as we get older and of remaining socially connected. Last week we looked at the value of re-connecting with who we are. Today we take the next step, and pose a question of great importance: are you letting others really know the real you?

You can have a busy schedule, family events, friends to talk to, and still feel invisible.

Many of us have spent years acting as:

The caregiver.

The problem-solver.

The powerful one.

The reliable one.

The one who always says, "I'm fine.

These roles can become so familiar that we forget to share what is really going on inside.

As we walk through this season of life, something interesting begins to happen.
We begin to ask different questions.

Who am I when I’m not taking care of everyone else?

What do I actually want?

What am I...Read More

Why Does Staying Socially Connected Feel Harder After 50?

After 50 funny things happen.

For many of us, we have a little more freedom but it can feel harder than ever to stay connected to the people we love.

For some, retirement alters daily schedules. Others have children and grandchildren in different cities. Friends might still be working when we have more flexibility. Some relationships just go their own way, as life pulls us in different directions.

We have lived this ourselves.

One week we might be on vacation, visiting family, or spending time with our grandchildren. The following week we realize we haven’t sat down with some friends for months. Not because we don’t care, but life just gets busy.

The truth is that connection rarely happens by accident.

Why Connection Matters More Than We Think

Research continues to show that the strength of our social connections is good for our emotional well-being, our physical health, and the quality of our lives in general.

Connection gives us:

People to celebrate with

People to lean on during difficult seasons

A sense of belonging

Opportunities to laugh, learn, and grow

If we don’t connect regularly, isolation can creep into our lives without us even realizing it.

The Challenge of Different Life Seasons

One of the biggest surprises after 50 is that everyone is not on the same schedule for life.

Some friends are retired.

Some are still working full time.

Some are caring for aging parents.

Others are helping raise grandchildren.

The result is, making time together often takes more...Read More

There is something many people do not talk enough about after 50.

Connection.

Not just being around people, but really feeling a connection.

The truth is, life can get surprisingly quiet this season.

The children grow up.
Jobs change.
Friend groups evolve.
Parents get old.
Schedules are different.

And sometimes, without even realizing it, we slowly fall into isolation while still going through the motions of daily life.

We have felt this ourselves at times.

Not that life was bad.

Not because we fell out of love with people.

But because adulthood has a way of keeping everyone busy, distracted, and emotionally tired.

And that's one reason why we wanted June to focus on connection.

Not in a dramatic sense.

Not with pressure to magically become more social.

But, in little, meaningful ways that remind us that we were never meant to do life totally alone.

Does Connection Change After 50?

One thing we’ve learned is that connection changes as we age.

When we were younger, connection was often part of work, school activities, raising kids, and busy schedules.

After 50, many of those built in interactions disappear. And if we are not intentional, loneliness can quietly settle in without us even realizing it. And that loneliness is not always obvious either.

Sometimes it looks like this:

Not having a real conversation in...Read More
