Don’t Drink the Funky Stuff: Why Every RVer Needs a Water Filter

(and When to Change It!)

June 24, 2025

When you’re living a RV life—whether it’s weekend warrior-style or full-time nomad like us—clean water isn’t just a luxury, it’s a necessity. And let’s be real, the water at different campgrounds, parks, and hookups? It can be... questionable at best.

That’s why having a reliable water filter in your setup is non-negotiable.

Why You Should Always Filter Your RV Water

Here’s the thing: campground water sources aren’t all created equal. Some may be perfectly fine, while others might contain sediment, chlorine, bacteria, or even worse—rust and funky smells. You don’t want that in your coffee, your oatmeal, or your skin.

A water filter protects:

  • Your health
  • Your plumbing system
  • Your appliances (yes, that tankless water heater counts!)
  • Your taste buds—seriously, who wants to sip on water that tastes like old pennies?

How Often Should You Change Your Water Filter?

This is where a lot of RVers fall off the clean water train.

Even the best filters have a lifespan. On average:

  • Inline filters (like Camco or Clear2O): Change every 3–6 months
  • Canister filters: Change every 3 months, or more frequently if the water is visibly dirty or flow is reduced
  • Whole-house multi-stage filters: Check manufacturer instructions, but monitor pressure and taste regularly

Tip: If you notice a drop in water pressure or the water smells/tastes off—change it immediately.

Sanitize Your System Too!

Changing the filter is only part of the game. Every few months, sanitize your freshwater tank and lines. It keeps your water (and your family) safe and your RV system running smoothly.

Ready to Upgrade or Replace Your Filter?

Check out the water filters we trust on the road. We've tried a few (some good, some real bad), but this one has held up through mountain minerals and Florida funk.

Yes, it’s an Amazon affiliate link. It won’t cost you a penny more, but we’ll earn a few cents to keep Mack happily brushing his teeth in clean water and me from side-eyeing every campground spigot. #SupportYourFavoriteNomads
