Destin Army Recreation Area Stop #3

Anniversary and Birthday Celebration

September 27, 2021

We arrived at the Destin Army Recreation on Thursday September 16th (The one year anniversary of Hurricane Sally).  It was a short rainy 66 mile ride from Raptor Ranch at Tyndall Air Force Base.

The Destin Army Recreation Area is open year round to active duty and retired military personnel, their families and DoD civilians.  It is 15 acres and sits on the the Choctawhatchee Bay, minutes from the Gulf of Mexico.  There is a bath house and laundry facility on site.

We first visited Destin in March 2020 and selected a back in spot with full hook ups.  This visit we stayed in a premium pull through spot #2140.

In March the boat dock and pier were closed and there was visible destruction throughout the park from Hurricane Sally.  They both have been repaired and are beautiful.

Kirsten got an opportunity to learn how to paddle board in the boat dock area check out the video here

In addition to the RV Park there are Villas and a Hotel.  You can view and download the park map here

This is a great park for families there is endless entertainment in the area, the beach and the park has a playground, swimming pool and splash pad.

While in Destin we celebrated our 16th Anniversary  with breakfast at one of our favorite restaurants the Donut Hole.  The weather was perfect and we were able to get in a 3 mile walk on the beach.

Mack celebrated his 50th Birthday while in Destin.  He wanted to quietly celebrate so we spent more time on the beach, at the pool and had lunch at Fat Boys.  instead of celebrating with a birthday cake we returned to the Donut Hole for a delicious slice of keylime pie go.

While in Destin Mack  had a special surprise as he was headed out to instruct a private Virtual Fitness Class he was waving at a gentleman  that was departing in his RV (RV people wave and smile at one another)  the gentleman stopped and got out  to talk with Mack and they quickly realized they had served together in Germany. It is always great to connect with old friends we hope to see you on the road again Mike Griffin.

Not far from the RV Park is the  Destin Harbor Boardwalk. At the boardwalk you can take a walk along the docks and see the many options offered for deep sea fishing, dolphin tours, glass bottom boat tours and dinner/party boat tours.

There is plenty to do on the boardwalk, such as shopping, rock wall climbing, ziplining and jet ski rentals..  There are several dining  and libation options as well.

Tip:  Check out Groupon while in Destin there are great offers on food and entertainment.  We indulged in a deep tissue hot stone massage  at Ocean Spa and it was only $69 total for the two of us and it was well worth it!

We had a great time sharing the beautiful scenery during a workout that we hosted for Fulltime Freedom Week Thank you to our friend Donna Baxter Porcher for capturing a screenshot for us

If you are eligible to stay on military campgrounds we highly recommend you checkout Destin Army Recreation Area.  Now it's time for us to say goodbye to the beautiful beaches and move on to our next stop.
